This archaeological site is located on Pine Island in Lee County. This site was a Calusa Indian village for over 1,500 years. Enormous shell mounds still overlook the waters of Pine Island Sound. Evidence of many centuries of Indian village life blanket the areas pastures and citrus groves. Proof of an ancient canal that reached across Pine Island is seen. Sand burial mounds are in the woods. Historic structures representing Florida’s early pioneer history also can be seen at Pineland. Come see the native plants and animals characteristic of coastal hammocks, pinelands, wetlands, and shell mounds are in abundance.
The site is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

The Calusa Heritage Trail is open daily for self-guided visits from sunrise to sunset.
The Calusa Heritage Trail Guided Tour are offered to the public during peak season (January – April) on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 10:00 a.m. Requested donations are $7.00 for adults, $5.00 for seniors, and $4.00 for children. Members of the Friends of the RRC are admitted free. Income from donations and memberships makes it possible for the RRC maintain this important archaeological site. Restroom available. Outside walk….dress accordingly.
