Property tax battle, round 2: Members of Florida’s Taxation and Budget Reform Commission, which can put proposed constitutional amendments on the ballot, voiced frustration that businesses, snowbirds and first-time homebuyers receive little relief in the recently approved tax reform amendment. “We are going to definitely address (it) and it should be our No. 1 priority,” says FAR President Nancy Riley, a commission member. It’s voters’ turn: The Florida Legislature passed property tax reform and a proposed amendment will appear on the January ballot. The amendment offers moderate relief for homeowners and slight relief for commercial property but does not go as far as an earlier House proposal; and tax portability, as proposed, could face a constitutional challenge in the courts. The Florida House thinks it has a better plan for property tax reform, but time may be on the Senate’s side in a showdown over the issue. Lawmakers must settle their differences by next Monday, or it will be too late to put a proposed state constitutional amendment on the Jan. 29 presidential primary ballot. Read more....

Florida’s House of Representatives released its updated property tax reform plan, which includes a number of initiatives favored by Florida Realtors. Forbes.com recently released its annual list of the 200 Best Places for Businesses and Careers, and, among those places, five Florida cities ranked in the top 10 for U.S. cities with the highest job growth. Cape Coral, Fla. held the top spot for cities with the highest job growth.
